The Daintree Rainforest is extremely diverse with many different types of plants and animals. It is the most diverse area of plants and animals in all of Australia ("Daintree Rainforest Plants" n.d.). Due to its expansive biodiversity, the Daintree Rainforest is a major help to the nitrogen cycle because such a large number of plants and animals die; becoming ammonia which turn into nitrates through ammonification. Then during denitrification they are converted into nitrogen gas back into the atmorphere, completing the cycle. ("How Does the Nitrogen Cycle Work?"n.d.).
Flora: There is an astounding number of different plants in the Daintree, many with unique features and adaptations. There are trees in this area that are estimated to be over three-thousand years old! (Buckman n.d.). Unfortunately, there are 227 plant species that are labeled threatened (Buckman n.d). Since the Daintree is so thick and tall with plant growth, some plants have adapted to be able to receive sunlight for energy. For example, the wait-a-while vine has barbs that it uses to climb other plants to reach direct sunlight ("Daintree Rainforest Plants" n.d). Some Notable Plants in Daintree Rainforest:
Fauna: There are many unique, rare and fascinating animals that inhabit the Daintree. Some Notable Animals in Rainforest:
